The importance of boiler maintenance

Your Lundy 8 boiler system provides you with hot water and heating in a sustainable way, every day. To ensure that it continues to provide reliable  heating and that it remains safe, regular checks and maintenance are imperative. If your boiler is not properly managed or maintained, a faulty and ineffective boiler will become the expensive price you pay.

To ensure your Lundy 8 boiler is in working condition, check the automated feeding system to make sure there are no blockages or unwanted build-up of wood pellets. The amount of ash produced from wood pellets is generally low however, ash build up will be found in the combustion chamber, heat exchanger and flue which must be brushed regularly in order to maintain the highest working proficiency.

See the following video highlighting the servicing requirement on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

Before you start cleaning the boiler, please remember the following safety measures:

  • Ensure the boiler is switched off at the mains
  • Allow it to cool down completely (ideally overnight)

Corrosion Inhibitor should be added to the water in the boiler circuit after the initial filling and then the quality of the water should be checked regularly but at least once every year.

If you live in an area of “hard” or “soft” water, your boiler may contain elements such as calcium, magnesium and sodium. To find out if you live in a hard or soft water area click here.

Hard water can lead to corrosion and lime scale deposits on things like pipes, hot water systems, kettles, electric irons and domestic appliances, which can reduce the efficiency of the boiler over time and which can also cause premature failure. In such circumstances, the water must be treated to create “softened water”. There are various techniques available on the market.

If your heating system is more than a couple of years old, a good flush out is required to remove debris before the Lundy 8 is installed to ensure the water system isn’t contaminated. This can be remedied by flushing the system with a chemical cleanser and then adding corrosion inhibitor.

Keeping your water system clean is vital, over time debris and harmful dirt may accumulate which can affect the overall efficiency of the boiler. To keep the system clean, there are a number of filtering products available that can prevent heating system contamination. These products are designed to safeguard the boiler against damage, blockages and to protect the system.
