vat increase on biomass boilers

It’s not too late to avoid the VAT hike on energy-saving renewables.

If you are looking to ‘do your bit’ by reducing the impact that your home has on the environment, you’ll need to act quickly to avoid a VAT increase on biomass boilers and heaters.

The increase will, in fact, have a double whammy as it involves both the product itself plus the costs associated with installation.

The VAT rate currently sits at a reduced rate of 5% (it was reduced from 20% in 2001). This was thanks to the UK Government’s strategy to reduce the carbon footprint of the UK.  However, the EU courts have since ruled that the VAT relief offered on the installation of energy-saving and renewables was too generous – and now the UK Government is required to take action following this decision.

As a result, from 1st October 2019, businesses will be forced to pass on an increased VAT rate.  It will not be a matter of choice, the additional costs will have to be passed on to the consumer and it’s quite a significant rise.  The current 5% rate will rise to the standard VAT rate of 20%.
